Community Health Services

Carroll University Community Health Services provides a variety of health and wellness services to members of the community at little or no cost, facilitated by College of Health Sciences faculty and students. We're a recognized leader in health science education, and our programs include one of the nation’s largest physical therapy programs, a top-ranked nursing program and one of the few rehabilitative exercise clinics in the country with a specific focus on helping cancer survivors. Physician assistant program students and faculty provide care in the Waukesha Free Clinic at Carroll University (formerly St. Joseph’s Medical Clinic), helping serve the healthcare needs of Waukesha’s uninsured community members. Our faculty and students are guided by the Carroll ethos of respect, integrity and stewardship, dedicated to serving others with humanity and compassion.

Carroll University Rehabilitative Exercise Clinic (CURE)

The Carroll University Rehabilitative Exercise (CURE) clinic program is facilitated by the Carroll University Master of Science in Clinical Exercise Physiology Program. It provides individualized, one-on-one exercise interventions for cancer survivors, those suffering with chronic health conditions such as type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, metabolic syndrome or COPD and/or people wishing to develop a healthy lifestyle. Clients of the CURE clinic receives a detailed medical screening, physical assessments, individualized exercise prescription, one-on-one exercise sessions and education targeting behavior modification and lifestyle change.

CURE Cancer Rehabilitation

Continue your recovery with this free, 12-week individualized exercise program, designed exclusively for diagnosed cancer survivors who are currently undergoing treatment or who have recently completed treatment. The mission of CURE Cancer Rehabilitation is to reduce the side-effects and toxicities during and following cancer and its treatments and to improve overall quality of life.

CURE Chronic Conditions

CURE Chronic Conditions is a free, 12-week exercise program designed to help individuals with chronic conditions. You’ll work one-on-one with master of clinical exercise physiology students to develop a personalized program designed to meet your unique needs and fitness goals. The mission of CURE Chronic Conditions is to improve chronic disease-related symptoms, reduce complications, limit disease progression and decrease dependence on medications.

CURE Express

Enroll in a free, 6-week individualized exercise program designed exclusively for those diagnosed with chronic disease or individuals looking to begin an exercise program. You’ll work one-on-one with masters of clinical exercise physiology students during prescriptive exercise sessions designed to enhance physical fitness and emotional well-being. CURE Express aims to assist apparently healthy individuals or those managing chronic disease in successfully adopting an exercise regimen and healthy lifestyle.

The Waukesha Free Clinic at Carroll University

The Waukesha Free Clinic at Carroll University is a unique partnership between Carroll University, Wisconsin’s first four-year institution of higher learning, and the state's oldest free clinic, previously-named St. Joseph’s Medical Clinic. It offers medical and wellness services to uninsured and underserved Waukesha patients, with care provided by Carroll faculty and health sciences students as well as physician volunteers.

Occupational Therapy Clinic

The Carroll University Occupational Therapy Program’s clinic provides activity integration, fine motor skill development and upper extremity rehabilitation services to individuals within the greater Waukesha community. Under the direct supervision of a licensed occupational therapist; students provide services that acknowledge the unique aspects of each individual, while providing care that enhances the quality of interpersonal relationships and the independence of each client.

Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Clinic

The Carroll University Master of Athletic Training Program’s Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Clinic provides musculoskeletal and sport-related evaluation, rehabilitation and consultation services to the physically active and athlete populations within the greater Waukesha community.

Therapeutic Abilities Clinic (TAC)

The Carroll University Physical Therapy Program’s Therapeutic Abilities Clinic fosters independence, health and wellness for community members suffering from chronic neurological conditions. Services include health and wellness instruction and skilled exercise instruction, assistance and supervision, as well as medical monitoring by physical therapy students, under the direct supervision of a licensed physical therapist. 

Note: The clinic is frequently at capacity, however, we keep an active waiting list and notify those individuals when there are openings in the schedule.

Caregiving for People with Dementia

The Carroll University College of Health Sciences Caregiving for People with Dementia course is designed for front-line, entry level health care workers to gain knowledge and skills in providing care to persons diagnosed with a dementia. The focus of this course is a general overview of dementia including signs/symptoms and disease progression along with best practices for engagement with personal cares and management of difficult behaviors associated with dementia. Participants apply techniques to manage difficult behaviors through simulation experiences.

Clinical Navigator Program

The Carroll University Public Health Program’s Clinical Navigator Program connects Waukesha residents and clients of the Waukesha Free Clinic at Carroll University with social service support and resources to promote independence, health and well-being. Families and/or individuals will be screened by a health professional at the Free Clinic to identify clients’ potential social service/essential human needs. Students will research resources and supports in the community to address these needs and facilitate client access to available services. Examples of potential social service/essential human needs include housing, food and social support.

Community Health Needs Assessment Program

The Carroll University Public Health Program’s Community Health Needs Assessment Program provides services to local, non-profit health and social service organizations who are seeking community health assessment data for neighborhoods in the city or county of Waukesha. Public health students, under the supervision of faculty, will conduct assessments and report their findings in written and oral formats.

Elementary School Health Education Program

The Carroll University Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program’s Elementary School Health Education Program provides interactive and age-appropriate health education programming for elementary school populations. The topics and scope of programs are developed in partnership with participating schools or partners.

Handwriting Camp

The Carroll University Occupational Therapy Program’s Handwriting Camp assists the greater Waukesha community and area elementary schools in addressing the recognized need for specialized instruction in handwriting readiness. Children participate in a 4-day morning camp with one-on-one and group activities that facilitate growth of handwriting readiness and skill. Families are provided with carryover activities and resources specific to their child’s needs and age-appropriate expectations. The program supplies a daily drink and snack for each student participant.
  • Serves: Local K4-2nd grade children (ages 4-8) with recognized writing difficulty on a first-come, first-served basis (May – August)

Wellness Massage Clinic

The Carroll University Physical Therapy Program’s Wellness Massage Clinic offers wellness massages performed by physical therapy students under the supervision of program faculty during the months of June, July and August. One-hour sessions include patient screening (medical history, blood pressure, heart rate), a 30-minute massage addressing patient goals and general wellness information.

Located at 237 Wisconsin Ave. in historic, downtown Waukesha, the Community Health Services building, houses the Waukesha Free Clinic at Carroll University as well as a number of programs from Carroll's Community Health Services.

Carroll University Sentry Building

Sentry Building Clinic

The Sentry Building is located at 1111 Sentry Drive, minutes southwest of Carroll's historic main campus. The facility houses Carroll's Therapeutic Abilities Clinic as well as simulation spaces for students.

    • Carroll’s Primary Care Training and Enhancement (PCTE) program, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), provides interdisciplinary training to Carroll health science students as they interact with and provide health literacy services to UCC Senior Center participants.
  • ​Live Well Waukesha County Initiative
    • The Live Well Waukesha County Initiative addresses two of the community’s most prevalent health issues: nutrition and physical fitness. These issues are addressed by Move Well Waukesha County free physical fitness events, and Eat Well Waukesha County free nutrition resources.
